Departments
The Pre-primary and Primary Department
This department has two units; the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Unit and the Primary Unit
Early Childhood Development (ECD)
ECD caters for development of curriculum for children under 6 years of age. This unit collaborates with other government institutions and non-government organizations in developing, producing, disseminating ECD programmes. The Learning Framework was developed and translated into different local languages which include: Luganda, Lusoga, Runyoro/Rutooro, Runyankole/Rukiga, Lubwisi, Lhukonzo, alur, Lugbara, Langi, Acholi, Leb-thur, Dakirimjong, Polkot, Ateso, Kumam and Dhapadhola. Radio cassettes for these languages have also been produced.
Primary
This unit is responsible for developing curricula for P.1 to P.7. The thematic Curriculum has been developed for P.1 to P.3 and was introduced to schools. From P.4 to P.7, the curriculum is subjects based and is still under review.
Contemporary areas like Road Safety Education have also been incorporated into the syllabus to equip learners with knowledge value and skills necessary for their safety while on the road.
The Secondary Department
Secondary Education aims at linking the learner with what has been provided at the Primary level, while preparing him/her for further education. There are 7 core subjects on the O’ level secondary curriculum namely: English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physical education, Geography and History. For the value and skills based subjects, these include: Literature in English, Religious Education , Music, Art, Agriculture, Technical Drawing, wood work, Metal work, Business Education, Home Economics, Clothing and Textiles, Food and Nutrition, Commerce, Accounts, Entrepreneurship, French, Latin, Germany, Kiswahili and Luganda. The same subjects are offered at A’ level, with general paper replacing English language.
Business, Technical, vocational Education and Training Department (BTVET)
This department develops curricula that is skills based and business oriented for formal and non-formal education. The department comprises of three major units: Business Education, Technical Education and Information communication Technology
Business Education Unit:
The Unit developes business oriented curricula. Curricula for courses leading to the award of certificates and Diplomas. The Certificate programs include: Accounting, Business Management, Marketing, Purchaising and Supplies Management, Secretarial Studies, General Business Management, Beauty Therapy and Hair Dressing.
The Diploma programs include:
Accounting, Marketing, Secretarial studies, Purchasing and Supplies, Journalism and Cosmetology.
Technical Education and Training Unit
This unit develops curricula for practical skills training and education in various technical and vocational fields.
Research and Evaluation Department
The department is made up of two units i.e. Research and Evaluation and the Library.
The research and evaluation conducts research intended to bring about curriculum revision reform that is geared to the National Educational needs at Pre-primary and Primary, Secondary, Business technical and vocational education levels.
Functions of Research and Evaluation Department
To conduct research and evaluation studies on curricula and educational programmes.
To evaluate the effectiveness of instructional methods and techniques used in schools.
To work with subject specialist to evaluate curricula in use.
To conduct research for use in curriculum planning and management.
To train panel members in research methods and techniques.
To collect and compile data and information relevant to the centre’s work.
To maintain an efficient document unit
To provide specialized research and evaluation support services to other academic departments.
The LIbrary Unit
The library at NCDC is a Unit of the Research and Evaluation Department.
The Library is at the centre of creating an informed and knowledgeable staff involved in curricula initiation, development and improvement. It provides information services by the application of modern information and communication technologies.
